A beautifully preserved specimen of the mangrove horseshoe crab, an ancient marine arthropod often associated with the term “Limulus” in the natural history trade. While true Limulus refers specifically to the American species (Limulus polyphemus), this specimen belongs to its Asian relative, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, sharing the same remarkable prehistoric lineage.

This piece is perfectly preserved, maintaining the natural form, texture, and coloration of the animal. The image is representative; each specimen is unique.

A Living Fossil

Horseshoe crabs—whether referred to as Limulus or by their correct genus—have existed for over 450 million years. Their form has remained nearly unchanged since long before the age of dinosaurs, making them one of the most iconic “living fossils” on Earth.

Why They Are Special

  • Ancient lineage: Among the oldest surviving animal groups
  • Unique biology: Known for their blue, copper-based blood used in modern medicine
  • Distinct morphology: Armored carapace, multiple legs, and a long telson (tail spine)
  • Ecological role: Native to mangrove and coastal ecosystems of Southeast Asia
