This extraordinary dugout canoe bow, carved by the Iatmul people in the 1960s, originates from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. Crafted from a single log of mangrove or kwila (merbau)—a hardwood similar to teak—it features a spectacular crocodile head carving, a symbol of strength and spirituality for the local populations. Canoes of this type could carry up to 25 people and were used for transportation, fishing, and ceremonies.

The Sepik River is renowned for its exceptional wooden artworks, and this canoe bow is a rare and valuable testament to that tradition. The intricate crocodile-inspired design reflects the spiritual harmony between the Sepik people and their natural environment, offering insight into their cultural narratives and remarkable craftsmanship.

A genuine piece of Sepik artistry, perfect for collectors or enthusiasts of indigenous culture.
