An extraordinary example of Indonesian shell craftsmanship, this monumental Syrinx aruanus has been entirely hand-carved by local artisans, transforming one of the world’s largest gastropod shells into an intricate work of art.
The carving follows the natural curves of the shell, revealing an elaborate underwater scene where a beautifully detailed octopus emerges among flowing seaweed and marine vegetation. The depth and precision of the engraving create an almost sculptural surface, while still preserving the unmistakable elongated silhouette and warm natural tones of the Syrinx shell.
At an impressive 56 cm (22 in) in length, this is an exceptionally large and precious specimen. Shells of this scale are already remarkable in their natural form, and the extensive hand-carved decoration makes this piece particularly distinctive.
Originating from Indonesia, it brings together natural history and traditional craftsmanship in a one-of-a-kind decorative object. Its dramatic proportions make it especially suited to a cabinet of curiosities, a refined coastal interior, or as a sculptural centerpiece in an eclectic collection.
