This substantial tantocenosis presents a compelling natural assemblage of ammonites, preserved together in a dense, sculptural matrix and weighing approximately 6 kilograms. As with other material from northern Madagascar—particularly the Majunga region—the composition suggests a fossil concentration formed in a once-active marine environment, where shells accumulated and were later mineralized together over immense spans of time.

Several ammonite specimens are clearly visible across the block, ranging in size and degree of exposure. The larger individuals display well-defined spiral whorls with a smooth, polished finish that reveals their internal chambering and subtle sutural patterns. Interspersed among them are partially exposed or sectioned specimens, offering glimpses into their internal geometry—delicate, lace-like septa preserved in mineral form.

The dominant mineralization appears to be hematite, giving the piece its deep grey to near-black tones with a soft metallic luster. In places, lighter calcitic or aragonitic remnants create contrast, while faint inclusions—possibly pyritic traces—add occasional visual depth. The interplay between polished surfaces and more natural, unworked matrix enhances the sense of authenticity, balancing refinement with geological rawness.

In terms of identification, the morphology—particularly the rounded, moderately involute shells with relatively smooth outer whorls and fine suture detail—is consistent with ammonites of the genus Cleoniceras, a common and well-known taxon from Madagascar’s Cretaceous deposits. Some variation in form across the cluster may reflect different growth stages or closely related species within the same assemblage.

Overall, the piece reads almost as a natural sculpture: a dense, organic cluster where each ammonite contributes to a larger visual rhythm. It is both a scientifically interesting specimen and a striking display object, embodying the quiet complexity of fossilization and the enduring geometry of ancient marine life.
